What changes in your skin in your 40s
Skin in your 40s often starts to feel different from the skin you had in your 30s. These changes are gradual and individual — not everyone will notice the same things at the same time.
- Early collagen loss: Collagen production naturally slows from the mid-20s onwards. By the 40s, this cumulative loss can become more noticeable as skin starts to feel slightly less firm.
- Fine lines becoming more established: Lines around the eyes, forehead, and mouth that were previously faint may deepen.
- Skin texture changes: Skin can feel slightly duller or uneven due to slower cell turnover.
- Pigmentation: Sun damage accumulated over years may start showing as uneven patches or darker areas.
- Dryness: Some women notice their skin becoming drier or less balanced in their 40s.
Not medical advice
Skin changes in your 40s can vary enormously depending on genetics, lifestyle, sun history, and other factors. This guide is for general education only. If you have specific skin concerns, a dermatologist can offer personalised advice.
Preventative routine — why it matters in your 40s
Your 40s are an excellent time to invest in a consistent preventative routine. Protecting against further damage (mainly through daily SPF) and supporting the skin barrier with good moisturisers often produces more visible results than any single active ingredient.
It is also a good time to introduce retinol if you have not already, as the research supporting its use for fine lines and texture is well established. Starting slowly and being consistent is key.
Ingredient priorities for women in their 40s
SPF 30–50 daily
Non-negotiable. Prevents further UV-related ageing. Use every morning without exception.
Retinol
Supports cell turnover and may improve fine lines over time. Introduce slowly. Use at night with SPF the next morning.
Vitamin C
Protects against environmental damage. Helps with uneven tone. Best used in the morning under SPF.
Hyaluronic acid
Keeps skin hydrated, making fine lines less noticeable. Layer under moisturiser on slightly damp skin.
Peptides
Support skin structure over time. Well tolerated and a good option alongside or instead of retinol.
Niacinamide
Supports the skin barrier, helps with uneven tone and texture. Works alongside most other ingredients.
A simple routine for women in their 40s
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Vitamin C serum (optional) on clean skin
- Moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, peptides, or niacinamide
- SPF 30–50 — final step, every morning
Evening
- Thorough but gentle cleanse
- Retinol serum or cream (1–3 nights per week once adapted)
- Hydrating moisturiser with ceramides or peptides
- Eye cream if desired
What to avoid
- Over-exfoliating — more is not better with acids and retinol together
- Skipping SPF — the single biggest mistake for skin in your 40s
- Switching products too frequently — give anything at least 8–12 weeks
- Heavy fragrance in skincare — more likely to cause irritation as skin changes
