Expression lines — the honest truth

Forehead wrinkles are caused largely by repetitive facial muscle movement — raising the eyebrows (horizontal lines) and frowning (vertical glabellar lines, sometimes called "11 lines" between the brows). These lines develop because the skin folds in the same places repeatedly over years and decades.

Topical skincare cannot prevent facial muscle movement, and therefore cannot fully prevent expression lines. However, keeping skin well-hydrated and supported reduces the visual depth of these lines, and consistent SPF prevents the additional sun damage that makes expression lines appear deeper and more set.

Skin hydration — why it matters for forehead lines

Well-hydrated skin looks smoother and more plump. Dehydration makes all lines — including expression lines — appear more visible. A good hydrating routine can noticeably soften the appearance of forehead lines, even if it does not change the underlying structure.

Hyaluronic acid serums, glycerin-rich moisturisers, and a consistent daily routine are the foundation here.

Retinol for forehead wrinkles

Retinol supports skin cell turnover, which over time can improve the texture and smoothness of the skin's surface — including in the forehead area. It can make the skin appear smoother and may reduce the visual depth of shallow expression lines. It will not prevent or remove established deep furrows.

See our full retinol guide for how to introduce it safely.

Peptides for forehead lines

Some peptide formulations are marketed specifically for expression lines — "signal peptides" or "neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides." The evidence for these specifically is more limited than for retinol or general collagen-supporting peptides. They are unlikely to cause harm and may provide some benefit, but should be viewed with appropriate scepticism unless stronger evidence emerges.

SPF — prevents deepening

UV exposure contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin that makes expression lines deepen and set into the skin more visibly over time. Consistent daily SPF — including on the forehead, which receives significant UV exposure — is one of the most important steps for slowing the progression of forehead lines.

Realistic expectations

Honest framing

Topical skincare can improve the appearance of forehead lines — particularly if dryness or dehydration is a factor — and can slow further deepening. It cannot erase established expression lines or replace the results of medical treatments like neurotoxin injections. Setting realistic expectations prevents disappointment and helps you find the right approach for your goals.

A routine for forehead lines

  • Morning: gentle cleanser → hyaluronic acid serum → moisturiser with peptides → SPF 30–50
  • Evening: thorough cleanse → retinol (gradually introduced) → rich moisturiser with ceramides
  • Weekly: gentle exfoliation with a low-strength AHA may help with surface texture — but not more than once a week
